As reported in October 2012, roughly 700,000 apps available for Android, and 25 billion programs were acquired from Android’s primary app store, Google Play. A survey found that Android is used by 71% of the mobile developer population, making it the most popular app-developer platform. A total of 900 million Android devices have been activated and 48 billion apps have been installed from the Google Play store till May 2013 and the growth has been a rapid one. Android’s share of the global mobile phone market, led by Samsung products, was 64% in March 2013. The best-selling smartphone in history, Samsung Galaxy S4, has android 4.2 Jelly bean as its operating system. In July 2013 a total of 11,868 different Android devices and eight OS versions as well were in use. Android’s success has made it a target for patent litigation as part of the “smartphone wars” between technologies companies like Samsung and Apple.
