Parking Problem

When Solomon the wise said there is a time and place for almost everything, he did not own a car or truck and had not faced a problem of vehicle parking. In Chandigarh, the issue of parking has assumed alarming proportions to the level that it even inhibits people from going to their favorite shops. Shop owner are also facing diminishing footfalls.

The Chandigarh administration has discussed about underground parking and high rise parking but it is all talk, no activity. Things are likely to get much worse before they get any better. And who is to blame? We are all quite happy to through darts at the administration for not offering adequate parking. Have we ever stopped to think who is at the heart of parking problem? It’s the driver.

Indian drivers don’t park them basically abandon their vehicles. It is indiscipline and an attitude that displays that he has no value for another person, his car and his relaxation and his rights. The accompanying photographs say it all. A Martino Alto one of the tiniest cars on our roads is occupying the space mint for five cars. Another car is parked in the corridors are mint for pedestrians, not for parking. But who is to tell these indiscipline how and the place to park? Who will educate them on how to respect the fact that other people to have a right to space? Sharing it the order of day.

What is required is a very huge dollop of good manners and social etiquette. The first lesson is that one should not prevent other cares while parking. Give way to ambulance, fire and police vehicles. You should also give way to traffic on your right and this is a must while entering a roundabout. The car on your right is already in the round about if you don’t let him exit, it is you who will be creating the traffic snarl.

While entering a roundabout, keep to your lane. Keep to the excessive left lane for left turn, the center lane to go directly in case you already in the roundabout traffic. It is amazing how we pick up bad habits. Our roads are two three and in some cases for lane. Chandigarh Police has been focusing lane driving. What applies in the city is even more important on the high speed expressways. No car should be in the extreme right hand lane, except for over talking.
